Criminal Procedure (Identification) Act 2022

The Criminal Procedure (Identification) Act, 2022 enables Indian law enforcement agencies to collect, store, and analyze physical and biometric data of individuals involved in criminal cases. The Act replaces the Identification of Prisoners Act, 1920. The Act authorizes the collection of data such as fingerprints, iris and retina scans, and physical measurements from convicted individuals and those accused of specific offenses. Aimed at modernizing investigative processes, the Act allows this data to be stored for up to 75 years and used to identify repeat offenders and improve crime-solving efficiency. It also specifies that the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) will manage the data collection and storage.
- Measurements: It includes finger-impressions, palm-print impressions, photographs, iris and retina scan, physical, biological samples and their analysis, behavioral attributes including signatures, handwriting.
- Coverage: All convicts, ordered to give security for his good behavior or maintaining peace, arrested persons, as well as persons detained under any preventive/ detention law. Provided that any person arrested for an offence committed under any law for the time being in force (except for an offence committed against a woman or a child or for any offence punishable with imprisonment for a period not less than seven years) may not be obliged to allow taking of his biological samples under the provisions of this Act.
- Measurements collected to be retained in digital or electronic form for 75 years from the date of collection.
- The record may be destroyed in case of persons who: (a) Have not been previously convicted; (b) Are released without trial, discharged, or acquitted by the Court, after exhausting all legal remedies.

Measurement Collection Unit (MCU)
- Measurement Collection Unit (MCU) are established for implementation of CrPI Act 2022 NCRB developed CrPI Application with CDAC
- In MCU Fingerprint, IRIS, Photo, DNA Profile, Measurement of arrested and bond over persons will be uploaded.
- MCU will be established in each district.
- MCU established in 05 locations (Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, Gwalior, Jabalpur) of MP.
- Data collection is started.
